Suitable places to sail for novice sailor

Hi,
Great ideas. actually im in Lincolnshire but I want to sail on the south coast. Incidentally I lived in scotland for 5 years and I want to sail there as one of my goals so much appreciate the suggestions. The idea of trailer sailing was to get experience of different waters. Chichester seams a good place to start, but the choice is endless it seams. I don't plan to loose the car and trailer on the slipway. The plan is to go down for a few days in several weeks time.

Thanks

Why I love Scuttlebutt...

The OP requests suggestions for sailing on the South Coast, and so he gets advised where to sail in Scotland and on the East Coast!

+1.. may as well suggest Sydney Harbour.. just as (ir)relevant.. :D

For the record another +1 for Chichester - there's years of sailing there without even going out of the harbour

Trail Sailing can be great, as you say a way to try out different sailing areas.

Chi harbour seems popular with the folk who have chosen to sail there but going by Dylan's films I would give it a miss.

Coastal sailing with no tidal difficulty could be on the Clyde, not the South coast but lots of places to visit an a fairly compact area.

I fancied going to Mylor but never got there yet. I was told that the access is steep and a 4X4 is preferable.

I learned on the Solent - nothing wrong with it. Calshot might be a good place to launch / leave the boat from time to time. You can launch from there and there is trailer parking as well.

There are also a few storage sites within 5 or 6 miles from Hamble slipways. Cost is about £30 / month so might even pay for itself in petrol saved.

Solent is ideal for sheltered and varied trips and harbours. That's why it's so popular. Starting out in the middle gives you the most options. Take a look at Hamble Point Marina, which is bang in the middle and has a nice slipway and plenty of safe parking. Mercury Marina, further up the Hamble has a campsite. Eling, right at the top of Southampton Water (near Totton) has a free public slipway with parking and Eling Sailing Club might be able to give you a mooring (only for small boats and drying out).

Hi,
Great ill have a ring round. sounds like there's plenty to warrant leaving the boat in the area.

There's a good slip with car & trailer parking at Northney Marina in Chichester Harbour.

I would avoid Langstone Harbour myself, pretty featureless with nowhere to go really, while Chichester has zillions of places to suit all tastes inside the harbour let alone access to the Solent.

It's not all crowds if you know where to go, some brilliant quiet anchorages with seals to peer at; feel free to PM me if coming this way.
