The boat is in Chichester and we live mid-Wiltshire. Is there any merit (i.e. cheaper) in getting non-marine upholsterers to do the work?

Quay Canvas. at Deacons in Bursledon. I can recommend this person. He does a good jub with canvas work and extremely reasonable in price. My spayhood including SS frame £900 inc vat.

I'd think it highly likely that a local upholsterer would do the job cheaper than a dedicated yottie specialist. Anyone not used to boaty ripoff prices must surely be worth a try?
As long as you have a pattern for the foam (the old ones?) any decent upholsterer can make what is in effect no more than cushion covers for it, and if necessary will mount these on new foam. Your choice of material is the only other matter.
A ever, just get quotes and find out...

Try upholsterers who work with caravans as they will be a lot cheaper than a marine upholsterer. When I bought new cushions for my Fulmar 8 years ago, the marine companies all quoted from £2500. A friend with a Fulmar recommended a local place, now closed, and they would supply the new foam and do the making up, but I had to supply the fabric. I went with a chenille fabric with a waterproof backing, exactly the same as one marine supplier's sample. Normally it is used for chairs in old peoples home. Oh, I had change from £800. So definitely look to non marine upholsterers.

Steve Wells here sewtrim.co.uk Easy access for you as located in Botley just off the M27. Just done my Golden Hind, mixture if recovering and making new. not "marine" although obviously given location does a lot of boats among domestic, commercial, fitting out buses - and did my Morgan seats in leather for substantially less than specialist car upholsterers. You need to book ahead 2-3 months.
