Hi guys,

I am looking to cruise up the East coast of Sardinia in the next week or so. Any suggestions for decent anchorages with towns / facilities nearby? I want to avoid marinas if possible.
Thanks very much.

Jody:)

For ancorages in NE Sardinia off townsI can recommend Golfo Aranci (to NW of harbour) and Cannigione (SE of Marina/harbour). Also Palau has a number of mooring buoys, for which there is a charge, but I have not used them.

North of Olbia there are many anchorages. Southwards I don't recall very many at all other than P. Brandinchi a few miles south, until almost the southern point. We anchored off Arbatax but that was in very benign conditions in an exposed place. It's a long, straight coastline, quite steep-to. We then berthed in P.Corallo, a small marina. From there around the corner to Villasimis, where there is an anchorage and a marina.

NE corner, Olbia and north, is full of anchorages. The east coast is otherwise barren, with marinas conveniently spaced about a day sail apart until you reach the SE corner, near Villasimus. So, S of Olbia, a coast of passage, in fact, not a cruising ground. Some detail to help cruise planning in the area on my web site.

Many thanks guys. That's about what I thought....not much until Arbatax and Olbia. Then loads around the Maddalenas. Has anyone had problems around there? I have heard of yachts being moved on by the police from anchorages (basically forcing people into marinas)?

We stopped a couple of places (coming South) but, yes south of Olbia there's not much that doesn't rely on good weather. Olbia itself has a free quay or you can anchor off and dinghy in.

We were moved off from Puerto Cervo anchorage by the police, and anchored in the enxt bay south which is quite exposed. We also anchored in Cala Volpe (still part of the Costa Smeralda) which has the most beautiful colour water but is essentially beside the slip road for the tenders of the megayachts.

The Maddalenas are absolutely lovely. Buy your cruising permit online before you get there and print it off - much much cheaper than paying daily on the mooring buoys. Once you have the permit, the buoys are free. Some slots are very crowded, but others, eg under the Casa Garibaldi (the Club Med has gone) are lovely, as is St Stephano.

For details of our experience, search our blog (below) for late July and early August of last year.

We cruised the east coast of Sardinia in 2009, popping across to Bonifacio (see our blog entries http://blog.mailasail.com/cape/85 and http://blog.mailasail.com/cape/98). We found plenty of good places to anchor. We were told that you can stay in any Italian marina for free for 12 hours as long as you don't take any services, and when we arrived very late in Marina St Elmo (Cagliari) and tried to pay and move on the next morning, the manager told us that he wasn't allowed to charge us, so we assume that it is true. Don't wander into the military zones by accident, watch out for the nature reserves and keep your distance from the beaches -- we heard of people being fined for anchoring within 200/300 m of the beach. We didn't go into the Madalenas, but stayed on mainland Sardinia. As other replies have said, there were hundreds of anchorages up the north and north east corner. Nice anchorages in the south of Sardinia too.

About the only other anchorage on E Sardinia S of Olbia is in the shelter of the small island S of Ste Maria Navaresse.

On that same coast be awre that he afternoon sea breeze can get up to a good F6 or even 7. Bear in mid as two of the ports, La Galetta especially, have entrabces open to the S
