A displacement 32' not very young mobo. I would be grateful for suggestions. Going to a broker who specialises in old wooden sailing yachts (aka MAB) is not the best!

I've been with Bishop Skinner since 2002, two small claims, both handled promptly and efficiently. You get a discount if an RYA member.

Based on my experience, the downside to using Y insurance is that on older boats you need a survey along with a lift out etc makes it a costly process and a higher premium. GJW is a good choice and value and you can talk to them to change some of the clauses, such as a total lost - replacement boat clause. Overall, Y appears to be better cover, but quite costly for some, you have to make a judgement call on the various risks etc.

On an older boat, do you really want to cut corners as it is the older boat that is most likely to fail. Save a few bob on a lift out only to be told your sea cock failed due to lack of maintenance so no pay out (as it would if you never lift because of cost) This actually happened & is covered on a thread somewhere I believe.
There is no free lunch, if insurers don't need a survey or some other such thing, they will get it back somewhere else. They certainly won't write risk for nothing.

From what I have researched, and from experience, Y seems a very sensible choice. Agreed that a survey could be a requirement, but at the cost of things going wrong then I would be fine with that.

Currently I am with GJW and they are great service and no problems thus far, but I want confidence in the contract and I have good faith that Y is a better policy. I will be going with them next time.

How old are we talking? Had no issues insuring our last boat, a 22-23 year old Broom when we switched to them.
