Suggested clothing

What clothes do you guys wear when out and about in the Bristol Channel? I was going to shell out and get Louise and I some basic wet gear. My normal way of doing this is to buy at the cheap end of the market to begin with, and then buy better kit when I know what kind of things I'm getting up to. I saw a Gill jacket and saloupettes suit selling for aorund the £150 mark. Would this be OK to start with?

Any comments at all will be a help to be honest.
 
We've got the Gill stuff, it's been absolutely fine. SWMBO's just bought me a new jacket & troosers from Tiger Bay Training in the marina, from the limited use they've had so far they seem well up to the job. Seem to recall she paid about £150 for them.
 
yes youwant protection from the wind Mcarther glen helly hansen you want to try to get the same type of material as goretex i paid nearly £200 for gill ocean jacket which is not as good as a helly tec jacket which i paid £30 for so shop around. they all do a brand of gore tex t k maxx is worth a look. you want layers of clothes you can always add or take off
 
Cheers, I've got plenty in the way of fleeces and so on, so I'm sure I can be warm. It was the jacket and trousers I was thinking of, and the footwear too, I suppose. Mike, that jacket and trousers sounds like the one I've seen. It just seems a lot cheaper than many of the alternatives and I was half expecting people to sy it was rubbish or something.

MrB, I'll get Louise to go and have a look at MacArthur Glen. I really struggle with all the crowds up there! I'm not good at shopping, real shopping that is, I'm fine with the Interweb.

I got my stuff from the Henri-LLoyd shop at Clarkes village in Somerset. The trousers were really cheap, £50 for TP2. The jacket was £120 for TP3. Would have cost over £400 from Force 4. I've been told there is a Musto shop somewhere in the midlands which offers similar deals. I was told the trousers are aways better value as they are really only any good for sailing, the jackets are bought for things like dogwalking etc.

Pardon my ignorance (again) Allan, but what are TP2 and TP3? Are they a make?
 
Sorry, they are the Henri-lloyd names for the various grades of material they use. TP2 is lighter than TP3. I've just checked and my jacket is GoreTex not TP3. My trousers are the type with no shoulder straps, the top is like a sleeveless jacket. I would recommend breathable material.
 
Right, I'm with you. All the sports have different names for the same technology, it seems. Even my walking boots have a hydration system. I have no idea what it does, or where it is, but it's comforting to know it's there. I think.
 
If you guys don't mind I'll tell you what I use on the East Coast.

For cold weather you need the good, close-to-the-skin stuff. I have found the Regatta breathable thermals which I also use for hill walking to be good. I also use their navy blue trousers, lined for winter, unlined for summer, and again I also use them for walking.

My daughter bought me a thin second layer fleece, brand name Peter Storm, from Millets, which has been brilliant, and second daughter bought me another one for Xmas. These are very good.

The outer layer is not so easy. I do have a Simson Lawence (spelling??) suit which is OK and a Henry |Lloyd breathable which is better. However for most weather I use a Regatta fleece which zipps into a Regatta breathable waterproof coat and a pair of Regatta waterproof/breathable trousers.

Sounds like I work for Regatta, I'm a retired accountant/engineer/cheepskate who likes value for money but detests being wet or cold.

Last year, just before we went to the Med, Millets were doing those Peter Storm Fleeces, with collars, for £6 a piece. We bought 4 of them, but I wish I had bought a pile more. They really are the business, with a waterproof shell. We looked at the end of season sale his year, but they didn't do them.

It's the footwear isn't it? Not at all suitable for the British summer.
 
Definitely buy one with a high collar - that is a collar that stands almst above your head when pulled up - micro-fleece lined too - Gore-tex you can stretch to it and layers

I normally just wear shirt, trousers and shoes ready to go out at the other end .......is your wheelhouse leaking or is the heating broken?

And what do you wear on your feet, apart fropm flip flops, of course.....

you will find that if you are wrapped up warm you will get away with deck shoes, again Mcarther glen, clarkes shop quality pair £25 look for ones with thick soles

Oh, do they do the blonde wig that Chris is modelling up at MacArthur Glen too?
