Looking for someone capable but not massively specialised to apply antifoul to my 36 footer. Happy to use a real expert to do the polishing etc but unhappy at paying top whack hourly rate to paint the hull. Any suggestions (apart from doing it myself) for a reliable person.

Many years ago when I kept my boat on a mooring at Hardway, Gosport, I used to get her cleaned. antifouled and the boot-topping band painted by the chandlery there. I think it was called Hardway Marine., run by Luke and his father. They used to do it between tides and the rates were reasonable. They would also collect/return the boat to her mooring.

Rob Pope (Classic Marine Services) at Wicormarine Yachthaven does it, but I don’t know how much he charges or how far he travels. Contact details on the Wicor website under approved contractors.

Rather depends on boat location and desire to travel but if in Gosport try the Gosport boatyard or Sealift at Haslar ? Atlternatively if you wish to venture to the island you might find cheap rates using local painters ?

DIY works for me, i cant afford to pay anybody

As a user of Gosport they are quite happy with DIY anti fouling and polishing however in response to previous post while DIY antifouling tends to be undertaken using basic tools and with feet on ground whereas polishing tends to require wheeled platforms etc if you have any form of keel of note . We have historically polished our own hull on a smaller boat but having outsourced task last year on larger hull we were very pleased with a more professional result and clearly less risk of accidents etc. If retired I would tend to use all those spare units of time in personally polishing and investing in a decent polisher etc but even then I'm not certain I would achieve same quality results as someone who regularly polishes. I therefore can see the Merit in DIY anti fouling if time permits and leaving repairs or polishing to gelcoat to an expert if some due diligence is performed on quality of work.
