Submarine identification anyone? Had to abort MOB as he "appeared".

While I was refreshing my sailing qualifications with Phil in January, we were training MOB when a submarine appeared rather out of nowhere of the Isle of Wight and headed right for us. We had to abort MOB and "rescue" "Steve" our Bucket & Fender man motoring on top of him and get out fast. Were all still in a heated discussion trying to find out what type of submarine and we're assuming it's Royal Navy.
Posted the video on our channel, if we have any Deep Sailors here we would appreciate a hint of what it is as we have NO clue.

I vaguely remember something about a submarine in the Solent being mentioned on here.

Not RN IIRC but a visiting sub from a friendly nation.

We still not sure of what it was, we could not really see the flag and no one knew anything about subs. All I know is that it was not there 2m before when I checked for other vessels.

It was on the 16th of Feb. 12.31 pm

There is a point in your video when you get a fleeting glimpse of what looks like a Dutch flag

This was in the local newspaper https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/d...ails-into-portsmouth-for-rare-visit-1-8381562

An there was thread on here about it.

Solent is a bit shallow for them surely.

I would have thought so, but I’ve been looking in google at any news I could find and they also refer she surfaced on the Solent. That she even come past the Needles is not something we expected. We did not however see her surface. She kind of just appeared AS to where she surfaced, your guess is as good as mine. I always assumed the east approach would be the one used. It’s just a case of continental drivers getting confused with which side to drive on. They need to paint something on those cliffs saying KEEP LEFT.

On the video you see the escorts meeting her and forming around her. They were waiting in different places and circling around for a while till they just stopped and waited. I also assumed they would meet incoming vessels at the entry to the channel.
WE think we did not see her because the Conning tower is very thin when viewed head on. That’s the assumption we ended with. On the end of the video you can ear how confused we still were. I had looked and saw nothing max 2m before. I was NOT the only one to look.

Way back when (I was a sprog etc....) it was in standing orders that submarines entering Portsmouth Harbour did so on the surface after passing Nab Tower. They were always accompanied by surface vessels, just like this one.

This one probably did'nt get the Memo as we were all keeping a lookout doing MOB Drills. Also they were still coming out of the hatch and setting about raising the flag etc. Even the Escort boats seemed to be playing Catch up. One minute we were all enjoying learning MOB Drills.....the Next the Instructor was hurredly taking the helm and motoring us out of the way.

To me the remarkable thing is how the weather cleared and the sea calmed in the minutes between the sailing and submarine video footage. Have the Dutch got weather control or the ability to stop the perception of time in observers ? .?

I’m assuming you don't live in the UK. All four seasons in a day of sailing. The week after, the marina we stayed in at Cowes actually froze. It’s thought the Dutch had the weather control device set to max.
