Does anyone know how i can stop seagulls using my boat as a public toilet!!!! I'v heard that C.Ds, Plastic bags and model owls work but i want something that doesnt lokk so tacky. Maybe something electric or like that.

MY BOATS MEANT TO BE WHITE NOT BROWN AND YELLOW!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Nylon fishing line stretched from mast to topping lift about 4" above the sail cover keeps them from s(h)itting there. If you really want something "electric" then maybe you could substitute bare wire connected to shore power /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All the other things I'm aware of for other parts of the boat are rather visible. A friend of mine uses the insides of wine boxes inflated and hoisted in the rigging but these are hardly invisible. He swears they're effective - but maybe he just likes emptying the boxes.

What devices are those? I guess you don't mean longbows or mousetraps. If you mean those ultrasonic gadgets I don't know - but I suspect that gulls are immune to these as I've never heard of them deterring garden birds.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried a scarecrow on their boat?

Our lot seem to fly at 10,000ft , the splatter effect from that
height boggles one.I do not have an answer, some peeps
tie CD discs together and let them shimmy in the wind.
I did try it but the sea rats did'nt like my choice of music
so their aim became even more accurate
Maybe Ack Ack might help!!

My problem is starlings who deposit their purple sh!t, after eating all the local berries, all over coachroof and deck. This year I've solved it after having a cover made to go over the whole boat, takes 10 mins to put on and starlings can sh!t to their hearts content and not damage my pride and joy.

THIS IS THE ANSWER
BirdXPeller Pro™ - Entry-Level - Sonic (audible) Deterrent - Weatherproof - Priced Per Unit - 12V Battery Option Available

DESCRIPTION:
For use against Seagulls & Pigeons. Ideal for home or marine use, the BirdXPeller Pro is a programmable species-specific bird repeller. This sonic (audible) repeller uses birds' own distress calls to create a "danger zone" - it frightens infesting bird pests away for good. In addittion predator cries (hawks, falcons etc) help scare the birds. Choose any, or all, of the 8 sounds, including predators to give the birds even more of a sense of danger. Then customise by choosing volume and silent time between sounds. Harmless to the birds and other animals. Can be used indoors or outdoors. BirdXPeller Pro uses natural sounds to chase away the birds, but it doesn't harm them. Easy Operation.

Brilliant, fashionable bird shlt deflectors for the vain sailor..

The peeps who live in the flats surrounding our marina complain about the noisy rigging, even though we were here first! they would have a fit re amplified bird noise

What, that's brilliant. It's like moving to the country and complaining about mooing cows. Good reason to turn up the volume /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ah! yes the sweet sound of halyards beating their insistant
tatoo on aluminium masts all night, its never all night with
me cos i've got a knife. HEH! HEH!

Don't take the P. Get bagged off just like the rest of us. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Our local swindlery sells a life sized owl to frighten gulls off. I don't know if it works. Oz gulls are much smaller than UK ones. Airports have huge problem with gulls and they use proffessional falconers to chase them away.
Anyway you may find a move of the mooring if that is possible will aleviate the problem. Even a few hundred metres can make a difference. I believe if you visit the boat often and clean up promptly they don't tend to visit so much. ie bird [--word removed--] tells them it is a safe place to roost. I would be interested to see if the electronic sonic scarer works. I am sceptical.
My problem is in the spring when they build a nest on the deck and bring a lot of sand and sticks. I then use ropes string etc to make a trip wire a little above the deck. Be wary of boom tents etc which make a great cave for them to hide in.
Lastly don't be tempted to use fishing net to cover the boat. It is truly 'orrible and dangerous trying to release an angry gull with it's leg caught in net. olewill

I downloaded the sound these electronic seagull scrarers make (a seagull in distress) and played it back when the seagulls were really annoying eg. when divebombing a duck with ducklings. It's great fun to see the gulls flying round desperately looking for one of their number who's being tortured and trying to find where the threat is coming from. When they can't ascertain where the threat is they fly away. Could get a bit wearing for neighbours if played constantly.

Seagulls are not stupid, far from it! They also have very good eye sight. If you put a bowl of boiled eggs in the cockpit when you retern to the galley a seagul will have swooped down and taken them! Later she will retern to say thank you leaving her visiting card!

To stop that just buy a toy snake cost 100SEK or 12 euros leave it curled up on the coach roof neither your boat nor the boats nearby will ever be bothered by sea gulls or ducks again.

The snakes sold look so real you will find that not even other boats will come to close!!Untill you tell them its only a rubber one.
