The other day when I came to stop the engine I pushed the stop button on the panel and nothing happened, not an emergency as there is a stop solenoid on the engIne but it’s a bit of a faff to reach for it. Now I’ve had this happen with a previous boat and just replaced the stop button and all was good so received a new button and changed it, quick test and it did what it should and stopped the engine. So full of smuggness with successfully solving an issue off we go, get where we want to be and press the stop button, engine falters slightly but just keeps going, press again and engine doesn’t miss a beat, head in hands time what have I missed, is it possibly just poor contacts somewhere that I need to investigate, I’m now at a bit of a loss and 45 quid lighter and no further forward.
Engine is a Yanmar 3ym30 with a standard Yanmar control panel
 
My engine has a pull cable to stop it. It pulls on a small lever on the injector pump to stop the engine. But when pulled the engine now speeds up !
I now have to put my hand over the inlet manifold to stop it.
You get a nice black circle on your palm.

If the new button with clean connections hasn't fixed the problem it will probably be the connections on the stop solenoid or the solenoid itself.

It worked first time which made me think I’d cracked it, but the very next time it was back to the same problem. Guess I’ll have to start delving into the connections further in

Yes, it's what it's supposed to do - but I thought you had doubts that it was working as it should. So you could check it by taking a flying lead from a known good +12V and touching it to the connection on the stop solenoid, and seeing if the solenoid activates. If it does - suspect the switch or its connections. If it doesn't, suspect the solenoid.

I suspected the push button switch which is why I replaced it and initially it worked but now it doesn’t again so I’ll check out the connections and try your suggestion in case it is the solenoid
