Studland Bay

BBQ's are now restricted to a BBQ site set apart at the western end near the beach cafe and steps up to the Bank's Arms pub. If you light up anywhere else the local NT Warden will be after you

Thanks for that info. I have anchored a few times en route to Dartmouth but never landed. I assume you still have to anchor a long way from the beach and need an outboard?

Depends on your draft - there is little rise & fall so you can get in fairly close if you want, there are lots of 'slightly deeper holes' so you need to scout around a bit to find a deeper patch - watch out for the holding as its not all that good and there are lots of patches of weed.
Theres not a lot of tide either so you can row ashore - if you overnight there, leave a distinctive riding light - its a but disconcerting when you see several hundred anchor lights and don't know which is yours

There are mooring buoys laid by the hotel and pub, you will be lucky to find one free

Take the walk past the village to the hill top and then down the ridge to Old Harry - the views over Poole Harbour and Swanage are amazing

Anchoring is possible closer in near to the old pillbox ruins towards the beach cafe off Redend rock (dont park on it). Otherwise remember the bottom shelves in both directions towards the shore ie towards Old Harry as well as towards the Bankes Arms.

Whether you need an outboard or not is more a function of fitness and I know you beat me hands down having played you at golf! I'm surprised however how many people seem to need an outboard for anything over 25yds these days, even I usually row! There is no tide flow worth talking about that you need to overcome and if you use the egg whisk you will have to carry that as well as the doughnut up the beach - local LW this weekend is around BBQ time I suspect and springs, so the beach carry distance will be at it's greatest.

Have a good time. If you have ear plugs you might even be able to ignore the PWCs.

Thanks Robin. We must have another game of golf sometime. Hope the weather holds for this weekend and Fleet Review. Will you be there?
I must get the chart off the boat and check the old pillbox ruins towards the beach cafe off Redend rock.
My boat is out for a summer scrub and goes back in tomorrow morning and I haven't started polishing the topsides yet! Too hot!

Go into the bay parallel to Old Harry but farther east heading towards the Pub in the distance, you will see a mini headland at the east end of the beach that starts by Old Harry end, then another beach runs east from this mini headland to the nudist beach end in the dunes. The pill box ruins and Redend rocks are off the mini headland, there will usually be a couple or three boats there close in as a marker. You can anchor inside the 5mph buoys, you know the yellow ones that they slalom water ski and ride plastic bananas and jetskis around. I love Studland, it is a truly lovely place but midweek or in winter when the prats have gone home. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm afraid for those of us from outside the Solent the berth fees for visitors in the marinas whilst the FOS etc are on have in some cases trebled. That would make it over £105 per night for us! As for the Blue team v the Red team for a politically correct inoffensive to the French Trafalgar re-enctment the whole thing leaves me totally cold. I was there for the last proper Fleet Review but this one might as well be rubber ducks in the bath as far as interest to me goes, sorry!

John,
Look forward to it. I played Barton in the Monty League last night. The view over Bournemouth Bay was like a postcard. Tomorrow, after the boat goes in, I am supposed to play at Stoneham, come back and pack up the boat to set off at 5 am for Yarmouth to wait for the tide at 2 for Poole.
We will fit in a game one of these days.
How is your boat, have you been away?
We spent 2 weeks in South Brittany on my brothers boat and then 3 weeks on ours to Tregier etc. Super!
