Interesting thread - I had similar problems with my oil and fuel filter. Always replaced myself with smear of oil and only hand tight but this year they were both very difficult to remove. I used the rubber strap type which has never failed me in the past but I really thought that the rubber going to break. They are the only sort that I can use on my engine easily. I've seen a similar strap but with a steel strap for only a few ponds on the internet so I'll get one for next year, especially as I've just fitted a new screw on primary fuel filter.
