Hi all,

I'm holed up in Weybridge on my way back to Bristol, and low and behold my brother is stuck in Banbury on the way back - unable to get on the Thames (though of course things might be in midst of settling...)

Being a fellow who likes to follow rules, he's very anxious about Isis lock, and how to proceed on to the Thames. If he passes through a lock when it's not open, does he buy a licence at the next lock that *is* open as he passes through, or does he need to sort the licence out before proceeding on to the Thames? I think he's particularly anxious about Isis, and whether it's ever manned, and what the ramifications would be...

Cheers

No need to panic.

Although King's and Osney are set up to sell you a licence, many (most) can issue you with one, though some lockies don't have much occasion to sell you one - so there might be some dithering. Though paying electronically might be an insurmountable challenge.
There's a list somewhere on the EA site, but not a lot of point looking for it (as any specific lock might be unmanned when you pass though)

If the lockie won't / can't he'll issue a notice which you carry and present ath each lock until you find someone who will issue one.

If you present and say you need a licence before the lockie spots you, that will earn brownie points as there as some folks who do their best to avoid paying.

As you know the lockies are "jolly good chaps" and helpful - so there should be no hassle....

for "you" read "he"

no point emailing boatreg as they are way oop north and don't connect to the lads on the ground.

Just keep going until you find a manned lock, with the correct forms and some change. I have had to do this on a number of occasions and often had to go on to the next lock in order to find someone to pay who has not run out of forms and who has more than 20p change in the old tobacco tin in the drawer.
