Stuart Turner 1.5hp - seized

Re: Just so.

The snag is that you have to reach round behind the engine to close the tap without either capsizing the dinghy or burning your hand on the hottest part of the block!

Better still if the plug cap is damaged broken - you electrocute yourself on the HT lead as well! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks one and all for this thread - I have found it very interesting and helpful. And I enjoyed the diversion into seagulls - I have a 1968 featherweight which I cherish. It burns at 10:1 fuel/oil, but I just love its simpicity. I doubt my suzuki 2.2 will last 38 years! Just an update on the Stuart - the head of my R3M is now off! Good job too, as the water ways do need some cleaning. This is the first engine I have ever taken apart - so wish me luck - hopefully with a clean up, clearing of water ways, and new gaskets and nuts it will run again! It came out from a Silhouette Mk II - I am hoping to put it into my Silhouette Mk III one day. By the way, how does the meagre 1.5hp perform? It sounds rather feeble when compared to all that steel, brass and engineering to get it!

Re: Stuart Turner 1.5hp - performance

The 1.5hp ST was used in many of the Clyde putt-putts you could hire by the hour on your trip "Doon the water" during the Glesga fair. Some of them made remarkable voyages, turning up many miles from there point of origin abandoned by their hirers.

As for performance; don't expect to make much headway in anything other than a flat calm. And I wouldn't recommend fitting an alternator or a rope-cutter!
