I know its a weird question and maybe funny one but yesterday i discussed with a friend if an ( average ) adult would be able to hold a 5hp kicker on a dinghy with a rope when standing on the pier by hand ;-)))

Sure prop selection is crucial but lets assume my lovely 2000 yamaha 5hp two stroke with the default prop.

What do you think ?

I've always thought that it was 10kg/1hp, thus 50kgs.
Sounds familiar - but whilst I can (just) lift 50 kg if I position myself and the load correctly I find it very hard to imagine that I could stand (or even sit with my legs braced) on a jetty and stop a 5HP dinghy from pulling away at full throttle? I doubt if you took a 2.5 HP tied the transom to the dock and gently accelerated up to full throttle that I could pull hard enough on that taught rope to bring the dinghy back towards the dock?

Ok , so it sounds holding a 5hp with hand seems to be not that easy , if possible at all !

The 10kg / shp sounds interesting !

Actually ran the numbers for the tug I'm on right now.

6700hp would equate to 67t bollard pull.
Of course she's optimised for bollard pull, which is 80 tonnes.

I could try this.

I suspect that I will be able to hold it, but only because my Merc 5hp two stroke produces max torque at higher revs, and me holding onto a dock line will prevent it getting there.

Would be cool to try ! I personally agree with you , i can imagine a fairly strong adult with shoes on a solid underground will hold it for a short period of time but i,m not sure .

What can be said : i cannot hold bitter-end,s tug ;-)
