Struts

Has anyone fitted struts to access doors to engine etc

I had installed several of them to my boat, at various places. It simply makes the life easier at the boat. Here are my modest tips:

- Get stainless steel ones. They are usually 3 times more expensive than the regular ones but they last 5 times more.
- Unless your major is on pyhsics, get struts with different ratings, ie 20 lb - 40 lb - 60 lb. You can find the best working one by trying. Before buying, you should decide on the length of the strut needed. The usual trend is is to buy one whose compressed length is half the length of the egde of the hatch that you will fit it.

I hope that this is helpful.

SGS (mentioned above) sell struts with adjustable ratings. Basically; you fit them and then let gas out until they operate as required. This worked well for me on my engine hatch. The downside is that if you let too much out you can't refill & you have to send them back for repair.

Hi!

One thing to check would be to make sure the hinges are strong enough. I have a single ram on a heavy hatch and over time it has pushed the hatch out of alignment because the hinge is a bit too flexible on it's mounting.
