If, like me, your engine lacks a rev counter, there is an App for your smartphone called StrobeLight.

I've used it to check the idle speed of my 1GM10, my 'cruising' speed at the engine's max continuous rpm, and flat out. Seems my engine and prop are well matched.

No connection with the App or developer, just a satisfied user.

Any more details? Link? Developer name. " Strobe light " seems to come up with loads of apps for lights which Strobe rather than srev counter.

This one in the Android store. They list caveats, one of which is insurmountable, that Android is not a real time OS, so stability of the strobe can't be guaranteed.

Ah. So it probably is a strobe, which you can run at a known frequency. It would be easy to guess a likely rpm so wouldn't take long to zone in on actual rpm / frequency.

I like the idea. Time for a dab of white paint on the crankshaft pulley.

I suspect that it is only on iOS / Apple. I'm on Android.

Now that I understand the principle, it should be possible to use an alternative.
