I read a post recently that suggested how to strip the paint off an outdrive. However, I can't find the thread anywhere. Could anyone involved in it please point me in the right direction or offer advice again on how to perform this task?

Use immac.....no seriously if you carfully mask off the rubber bits can,t see any problem with using a water wasable paint stripper providing the boats on the ramp you could catch the arisings in a bucket placed underneath.Coarse the other way is the brass bruch on the drill only trouble with this is it,ll find any corrosion on the leg and remove it pronto, can,t you just rub it down to a stable surface and repaint?.
Good luck,T,b.

I would be wary about stripping paint, as underneath there is etch primer and a special anti corrosion primer which would be difficult to replicate.
I have seen people do this, only to find all their new paint comes off very quickly.
If you really must do this, I would consult a specialist aluminium painter.

Article a little while ago by Peter Caplen on this he used Dilunette stripper, but I'd assume that this will go back to bare Ali so will need etch prime, undercoat and top coat.
I've always used Nitromors water soluble as it removes everything, clean itoff afterwards with either garden hose or even better pressure washer.

I had a look at Dilunette this afternoon and it says "Do not use on aluminium". I also spoke to Sillette Sonic and they said that they normally use a sanding disk on a grinder but have tried lots of stuff. I'll try the Nitromors on a small patch and see how I get on. I've bought some Etch Primer and if none of this works I'll just touch the thing up and give it a re-spray after I service it.

Re: Stripping your leg

Just a thought but if you use a "sander" with any metal in the abrasive this could embed in the soft alloy of your leg and poss cause probs.Think that the troubles which go with cleaning and painting legs got a mention on.....http://www.yachtsurvey.com

Dilunette gel is prob the best. It will take it all off in one application. Nitromors will do it bu prob 2 or 3 applications. That acid etch you got for the engine prob won't be compatible with the leg paint. Use Acid8 etch prime. For the top coat give me a call as we can go to that place an get a 2 pack enamel that will do it. You can borrow my comp and spray gun if you want.

See ya in the morn about 9 ish. Give me a bell.

Barry,

Lisa doesn't deserve you. I'm going to take a leaf out of byron's book and demand your babies!!!!

Nope, it's 12.40am and I'm already Duncan Disorderly, so I'll retract that but I'm really grateful. I will however leave an open babysitting certificate on-line even although they nearly broke my legs last time. They're getting too big to sit on knees!!
