Thought that would get your attention! Just about to part with what seems like a huge amount of money for an ambassador rope stripper to match my volvo 29HP sail drive plus kiwi prop. Any alternatives?

Snorkle and Knive /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Considerably Cheaper ..

Got an ambassador/kiwi on mine.

I have found 'evidence' of at least 2 sorts of rope on mine. Didnt feel a thing.

Very expensive, agreed, but would you want this hanging off your prop?

Motoring home from Ostend. Fortunately hanging off the rudder, could so easily have wrapped the prop. So I bought an ambassador shortly after.

Yep, nearly 60 feet of it.

That's the one I went for as it has the reputation of being the best. Had it on previous boat as well.

The problem with rope cutters is that if they are doing their job well, you don't even know about it.......

I couldnt avoid a 22mm diameter multiplait mooring line, (unfortunately our own /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ), and heard a very dull thud as the ropecutter dealt with it like a knife through butter.

I ordered at LIBS last year, and had it fitted before we brought the boat back from Spain because I couldnt have slept on night time coastal passages without it.

Had one on our last boat and got one on the present one. Cant see the point though, I dont think I've ever had a rope around my prop. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sailing Today Oct 1999 did a test of various types to compare cutting ability - pm me with your email address and I'll send a copy (pdf file about 600k). This concluded that the Stripper was the most effective, but was expensive.

I fitted the ProProtector as the clearance between my prop and p bracket was too small for most rope cutters - it's a budget model but came out quite well in this test.

I have two Kiwi props/strippers in a box on the RH fwd bunk as I didn't have time to fit them before leaving Emsworth. Pity really as I now have a length of line wrapped round the stbd saildrive....DOH.....Tell you what Rosbif, such a deal I have for you. Buy me a couple of beers, then I'll hold you by the legs while you inspect firsthand what can happen if you don't fit a stripper (of course, while you're down there /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I lurve local fishermen really /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Lots of cheaper alternatives but none of them nearly as good as the Stripper.
If its peace of mind you are after then fit the Stripper.
If peace of mind is not so important, and you want to save some money, then don't fit anything at all.

I should add, that when we didn't have a rope cutter, we once picked up a rope which was wound around the prop shaft between the prop and 'P' bracket. The old Bukk engine just kept on turning, winding on more and more rope. Eventually but not before the front engine mountings bent and the aluminium sides pulled out of the ZF gearbox the engine stopped.

10 years ago the insurance bill came to £3500!

Thats when I fitted my first rope cutter.

OK. Any deals related to excel boat show, anyone know?

At boat shows Robin normally sells them at a small discount.

Dependant on your mileage might be good to get a spare set of bearings thrown in.

Had them on 3 charter boats over 10 years but when I ordered the Jeanneau they "chose" to fit an alternative. Demanded my money back and gave it back to them after 1st year and 4 dives to free ropes. Fitted stripper!!

The Channel & French coast can be very "dirty" with ropes & fishing nets.

I also now have a stripper. A charterer tried it out on one of our 22mm multiplaits. I must now splice them back together... but I know the stripper works!

No problem fitting to a Westerly Storm. You just need an adaptor spacer on the half coupling to move the shaft back and create the space. Then you can have the benefits that the other posts have!
