Straining rides

good time for a 10.... my PB is 27 something.... but then, I am an old bugger compared to you!

Ta :) My best is 25:37 - although it's a sporting course its not a quick one - a number in our club prefer the A3 or the A27 DC courses - personally I'd rather stay off them ...
Aim for this year is to break the 25 minute on our courses ...

Anyway - old bugger is no excuse - there are older buggers than me in the club who are considerably faster than me ... and they do like to remind me! ;)

A nice ride this evening, 23 miles at 14.8, which included crawling for a mile through Stratford traffic, so I reckon dead on my 15 mph target. Just got to keep this up for another 47 miles :)
Back was a bit better this evening, soreness started at about an hour, but not bad enough to stop.

nice one Paul and good to hear the aches and pains are easing :encouragement: I've managed to get out for the last two days too.. just a couple of 13 milers but coupled with 7 mile walks to/from work both days... pretty much lost the excesses of last weeks holiday as a result ;)

Work does indeed get in the way. Im using the motorbike to commute at the moment so managed to get home by 6.30. Quick change last night and manged 17.5 miles at 17mph driven by the fact it's was getting dark!

Going to try a little longer tonight and then a "big" one Saturday early morning.

Gary, can you share the final route with me on strava? Want to have a look at the hills to see where I can find some similar, it's pretty flat where we are so not making much progress with hills!

toughest ride completed so far. 5 miles !!!!

to collect the car that was abandoned in the pub car park last night after consuming several pints of Tuborg washed downed with an unspecified amount of bourbon... hurty heads and movement don't mix :( ;)

Best hangover cure I have ever found.

Out on Friday night, way too many pints, left the pub at closing time. Drank a litre of High5 zero Saturday morning and by 1:00 pm I am setting off on my pushbike to cover 46 miles! :)

I have to admire your commitment to the Straining Gary.

I did a quick 17 this evening, ave 16, so quite happy with that. Back got a bit painful at 40 mins again, so 2 min stop cued it. Still need a solution to this.

Do any of you use energy bars or drinks during your straining rides? I will do so on the event, but on Saturday mornings I am heading out on a couple of cups of tea and no food. This may be one of the reasons I run short of energy?

Always Paul. I drink every 15mins after the first 60-90 mins and take little boxes of raisens you can buy from lidl to eat regularly before any feeling of muscle fatigue kicks in.

Interesting. I guess we are using 700-800 cals per hour. I couldn't eat the raisins, food of the devil, and waste created by rabbits, but a bit of banana might help.
On the 6th I will take bottles of energy drink plus Ribena and something like PowerBars to consume on route. This has worked well for me in the past. Just drink ribena on the straining rides.

I got a free sample of a drink when i bought something bike related kit a while back, trouble is my bottle cage broke and the bottle came out without me realizing after around 5 miles so no idea if it was any good.

Used some of the tablet things Paul mentioned on Saturdays ride and they were ok, like you tho Rafiki, Saturday rides are done on the back of a couple of mugs of tea and no food so the last 10 miles does seem to be tough.

in comparison to others (especially round my way) 40 miles is a warm up ride but its amazing how many calories the body uses when working hard. will try and plan a little better but if i go our at 7 on a saturday morning, i would need to be up an hour before to eat breakfast and let it go down and frankly thats just not right!!!

Can I suggest you either take or plan on getting something savoury to eat on route .. eating and drinking sweet all day isn't nice - and is not what your body is used to.
The High 5 tabs are great for replacing your fluids and it's easy to carry the tablets to pop into your bottle of water ...

+1

I often stick a small pork pie in my saddle bag....

Average male burns 2500 calories a day.... add in up to 700 an hour when cycling, and you NEED to stick some fuel in.

Besides my pork pie, I tend to carry a handful of energy gels, simply as I've found a flavour I like and get on with (and take one every 20 mins when pushing hard, or every 30 to 40 mins of steady riding)... and sometimes a banana in my back pocket.... but best of all, you can't beat a stop for cake! :D

Reminds me of when our kids were dinghy sailing competitively. Some of the parents were talking about nutrition plans and buying energy supplements. Ours got Mars bars and pork pies and did very well on them.

Well it had happen sooner or later.... all those piccies of nice shiny new bikes....

I've finally relegated my old Specialized to the role of winter bike, put my TT aside and apologised for using it less, and bought myself a nice new shiny bike as well...... :D

Anyone got any technical advice on how to tell SWMBO?
