Anybody know how they work? Stowe are unhelpful and we have an instrument giving weird direction readings. Apparently there are three wires each giving a different voltage so I'm wondering what the symptoms might be if one of those wires is duff.

I think it uses a Hall Effect sensor with 3 outputs on the green, white and yellow wires. The voltage on each of these wires (relative to the black wire) will vary between 0v and about 12v depending on the position of the wind vane. It's also possible that the instrument head is faulty.

I have the same type of problem. The direction indicator seems to be on the same constant heading most of the time, and then spins all over the place. I was going to start with a trip up the mast to check that it is plugged in OK but would rather not if in fact it can be fixed on deck. Can you let me know how you get on? I have a manual somewhere so if you fail to get one let me know and I will scan it and email you.

Older ones from Stowe use a very fancy potentiometer. The track and bearings eventually wear out. I've been able to clean the bearings but still have too much friction in the track despite taking it apart and cleaning it. New pots are unavailable anywhere (it was a special) but they have offered me a used one (still not cheap).
They do now use Hall effect sensors and they will upgrade an old windhead for £200, or you can buy a brand new one for £300. http://www.stowemarine.com/mastheadunit.htm

Willow3 you are absolutely correct and thank you for passing on the link.

Matelot, I don't think your comment that we are unhelpful is fair. We have plenty of free information on our website www.stowemarine.com/support.htm that describes fully how to test the wind system. On top of this we will provide absolutely free advice if you email us. Please consider that our only profit is from servicing and parts for existing customers’ equipment that we didn't sell in the first place! If it wasn't for us, no parts or info would be available at all!

Also note that most of the manuals are available for free here: http://www.stowemarine.com/information.htm
