Storms in Porthmadog

We arrived home from France to be told of the ferocious storms that wreaked havoc in Porthmadog (and other North Wales) harbour. If you know this supposedly sheltered harbour you would be forgiven for thinking "nah, surely not".

Good 'eavens. I've just spent a week near Machynlleth - including the night in question - and didn't notice any blow to speak of. Either I sleep very well or it didn't get very far south.

Just got back from a short weekend in Pwllheli

We had to repair our stanchions and lifelines broken off in the storm.

This weekend went out for a trip and when in need of a nice can Of 6X found that the set of four had burst their ring pulls and leaked out in the underberth storage.

This combined with the fact we had red antifouling on the tops of our fenders indicates that our boat and the one rafted with us on piles in Pwllheli were considerably knocked around in the wind.
Locals reckon storm was as bad as last Autumn.. Could have guaranteed weather would break as soon as Swbo School hols started...what should we expect

Yes indeed - the damage from the storm was as extensive as the storm itself for quite a few harbours, not just ours. I'm just beginning to find out more details such as whose boat did what to whose! Most of the larger mobos are down the channel away from the inner harbour and if they didn't rip the cleats off their pontoons, then some ripped out their own cleats from the GRP. They then blew up into the harbour, playing "pin-ball" on the way!

There are now quite a few (about 20 boats) hauled out in the yards waiting for insurance assessors. The 38 foot mobo in the news story was a Searay which belonged to friends of ours.

To get a storm surge higher than the old quay side wall in the picture is just awesome (read frightening) and in my 37 years in Porthmadog, I haven't seen the like of it.

Yep, it seems it was as bad as any can remember
I was suprised, it seems so sheltered there
'Gary Fiberglass' based in Bangor
Showed me lots of piccies on his I Phone whatsit
Been summoned to do 'estimates' couldn't believe the carnage!
Was around the Eastern side of Anglesey today
Saw a yacht on the rocks
'Totalled' I reckon
Another from Red Wharf bay had 'loosed' it's mooring
Apparently ended up in Southport!

I knew you wouldn't be too far away! Your last quote made me laugh out loud !!

Yeah, strange thing about our "sheltered" little harbour...It faces due South directly, and when those Southerlies blow in, they blow in hard and as the estuary narrows past the mouth of the Dwyryd (near Portmeirion to the East) it funnels the wind in past the low hills to the west and north. Result? Well, think "jet engine"

We didnt feel much in our caravan at Hafan Y Mor but went to see a mate of mine at the penrohs campsite and it was complete devastation, must of been 50+ ownings distroyed and it actually peeled the wholr roof off an older stattic van.
