Latvia installed a warning system a while back ... that sends out a Specific Warning Sound and message on Mobile Phones ....

As far as I can make out - it covers Military Action (yes - paranoia reigns here about Russian invasion) .. as well as Civil Unrest ... and weather ...

Tonight I had my phone making awful screeching sound ... the warning of Storm tonight with winds expected over 28 m/s ......

So over 55 knots ? Is that gusts or mean speed. I had to look up m/s. All this modern measuremnt stuff for boating ...
The mean average was over 24 m/s (46kts) ... with guts over 30 m/s (58kts).

Fried of mine was up at 4:00am trying to save roof as well as limit damage to his house ...

We still have another ~20hrs of strong winds ... at present its ranging frrom 15 to 24m/s ....

We first cruised in Sweden in 2000 and were reliant on their VHF forecasts which were given in m/s. It soon became second nature to double the figure, which was near enough.

System in Taiwan is mostly activated for earthquakes, though it does air raid drills and typhoons as well

DIY-wise, turns out a Daihatsu Skywing up on one jack stand and a jack is quite a sensitive seismic detector, and a major incentive to improving one’s limbo dancing.

Got out from under sharpish, in plenty of time to take my call from La Presidenta.

She must have had one as well.

Close friend of mine was killed under his V70 Volvo .. which came off its Jack Stand .... he was a professional Volvo mechanic as well ...

Earthquakes aside, I've had close shaves working on the traditional granite set (square cobblestone) road surface outside my Edinburgh flat, which are uneven, slippery and horribly dangerous things to jack up a car on, espcially when icy.

You find systems like that all over the Former Soviet Union. I think it's a commie thing. Modernization of some old civil defense system.

We get those alerts sometimes every few days in Almaty -- mostly earthquakes, but also heavy smog, thunderstorms, etc. Make the mobile screech something awful.

That's exactly what I do. Easy peasy.

And you can do it backwards, to. How many meters do you go in x number of seconds or minutes at 7 knots? Divide in 2 and multiply by the seconds, and you've got it.
