Just installed a water maker. Water in Cala Dor is vile ( desalinated but they forgot to remove all the salt!) so I intend to have water from the water maker the vast majority of the time.

This will of course have nil chlorine in it.

I empty the tanks for winter but that is it. As such during the season there will be times when the water is in the tanks for some while.

I assume this needs a slug of chlorine to keep it safe?

I would think yes too, but I don't know for sure so I think you need to google it some more. Although I use the w/maker plenty I tend to put mains water in every few days and therefore don't worry about dosing the w/maker water with chemicals

Yes, lovely though C D'Or is, the water is atrocious. When we washed the boat down and let it dry, it was covered in salt!

I think it is the whole of that corner of the island.
We don't have an on-board water maker so we needed to pop in to Rapita when we were on the anchor at Es Trenc last summer.
And then later we were in Cala D'Or.
Both places the water was so salty, you could even taste it when showering.
It was good to get back home to some nice fresh local spring water.

I would be cautious adding any product to your "Water maker made" water. Most types use the newly made water to flush out the membranes at the end of the cycle.

Many chemicals could damage the membranes meaning an expensive repair.

We are leaving for long distance plans soon and our Water maker rep stated emphatically to use the water for every thing but not to add any chemicals. Your manufacturer may state differently.

I'd be interested in your make of WM...?

Indeed - as you say even when showering when not knowingly gulping water you can taste it.

But hey - at least it is sunny!

Palma water is fine

Don't get me wrong - I wasn't complaining.
I'd rather be there in the sun on those beautiful anchorages.

As you say, Palma water was fine - also water in the north was OK (Alcudia/Polensa).
Maybe the mountains have something to do with it.

Porto Colom is another place to steer clear of the water.

The auto flush water runs via a carbon filter for this very purpose - specially to remove the Chlorine.

We have a Seafari HRO 900.

So you are correct in that it needs flushing with non chlorinated water, but they solve this with the carbon filter.

Yep. I leave mine on auto back flush using street water and it's fine (with the filter as you say)

I don't think that is an option. The flush water must be chlorine free. If you fill from the tap it will have chlorine in it which according to the user guide is doom and the end for the RO tube.

If you only ever used water maker water then you may get away with it, but I suspect this is unlikely to be 100% gteed - after all if you are at a port with nice water - why would you not fill up?

The filter is not that large - you just may need to fit it somewhere else on the boat.
