Hello Folks,
It looks like the port engine in me old tub has finaly given up,Any suggestions on a pair of suitable replacements? The boat is a storebro,35ft and about 7 tons
(actually i think they really only need a good overhauling but bits are a bit difficult to find)

MD32's were never the greatest engines....

I've seen the 34 hull with 63's, but they were really far to heavy .... and did nothing good for her...(love the hull btw).

Easy and relatively cheap replacements would be reconditioned TMD40's (B's preferrably with about 158 hp should slot straight in ...A's are OK as well, but will work harder to keep more than 12 - 15 cruising). The B's would set her free...

Of course, if you could stretch to the 41's, then she'll be very different indeed... and they should still slot in nicely.... but you may end up with having to fit bigger shafts which is expensive...

Anything else than the 40,41,42, 43series, you'd end up with more engine room re-work and change of balance in the hull....

The Ford 2704's with 180 Hp and above... (220's are nice in the 34 hull) are great engines, which suits her well.

If I were to look at new engines, Id' stay with low RPM's such as Mermaid, Sabre's etc... Suits her very well indeed, but may introduce other challenges.

if you want to stay with the original HP (which on the MD32's would ahve been in the mid 90's)... you have a wealth of choice from Ford 4 cyl through to Deutz and Nanni's...

All depends on what you want out of that very capable hull...

Nice reply Mr Master Diver!
I like the idea of Mermaids too.
Nice peeps to deal with, very helpful imho.

What do reckon about a pair of Yanmars circa 200hp?
Different characteristics than the Ford derivatives I admit but I quite like the make.

Good luck with the Project Tuggy.

I have been fettling My old Volvo in My old Swedish tub for some years.
Sometimes wonder if I should change lumps!

Thanks for the excellent info Alf.Ill start looking for a pair of TAMD40s,I would get kwackers to help me out but HLB reckons hes a bit of a bandit

Thanks for the excellent info Alf.Ill start looking for a pair of TAMD40s,I would get kwackers to help me out but HLB reckons hes a bit of a bandit(Apparemtly HLB will soon need to sell a kidney to keep up with the bill----only messing Kwackers !!!) Sorry we didnt get to meet during mytrip from Germany,We ended up not doing the Menai as originally planned. But thats another story.

Yanmars nice too, but at round 200 hp, you may end up having to increase shaft diameter, hence not thinkin too much on new engines... of coure, the Mercruiser/Cummins range is nice too, but wanted to know a bit more of what is expected in respect to performance...

The hull is great up to the early 20's ... and at 16 - 18 she'll pound through the most without hassle .... hence the 40B's which would be easy to fit in.

Any higher than about 180, I think you need to consider shaft dia... as I seem to recall from memory that Storebro did fit higher diameter shafts on the ones with the bigger engine options...

I can vouch for TAMD40s in a Storebro 34. Avoid the 'A's, and go for 'B's as already suggested - the 'A' had a terrible exchanger which was prone to clogging and being really inefficient. The 'B' has a proper tubed cooler which can be cleaned without too much hassle.

Good luck finding an engine(s) though - I tried to get myself a spare some years ago which I planned to recondition. I struggled to find anything.

You may find Coastal Rides has something - be clear in terms of understand what you're actually buying though - i.e. have they been reconditioned - if so, what was done, what is the warranty etc etc.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Paul
