Following on from Sundancer post on storing a petrol generator (Petrol in bilge), it got me thinking. I store my petrol container (5litres) in the gas locker as it is vented, does anyone else do this or should I reconsider?

IF the petrol container(s) are firmly sealed, AND have no other leaks, NOR any possibility of the can(s) being pierced by the anchor, AND the locker is fully sealed from the rest of the hull, AND the vent is at least an inch dia, AND is always clear of the water, AND you are feeling lucky 'cos it's Friday and nearly Harvest Moon, then ....

yes, perhaps. :)

We have a below deck fuel tank, but always take out 'extra' fuel'.

You never know when you will need it.

What's an anchor got to do with it and the locker being fully sealed! I was refering to a gas locker.

I keep 22ltrs of petrol in a plastic diesel can in a locker with a tiny (less than 5p diameter) vent hole which has never been a problem.

Sealed up tight, out of the sun and well packed in the locker its not an issue. (I have it in plastic can rather than steel to avoid damaging the boat)
