Got a few crevices to fill in a sapele saloon table. Anyone got a recommendation for a stopper they've used that gives at least half decent resuts?

Sanding dust from the wood you're working with, mixed with varnish until it becomes a thick paste. Far better than the Brummer stuff and matches whatever wood you've got.

I've previously found glue and dust (in which we trust) turned out noticeably darker than surrounding timber. Does using varnish make a difference>

I've not tried it with glue, but with varnish it works well, given that you do not use too much varnish. The mixture needs to be on the dry side, a kind of crumbly paste - not a syrup.

I've used West epoxy mixed with the saw / sanding dust to a thick paste as a filler, it is darker of course, comes out the same as the end grain colour.

You can always adjust this if important by sawing a piece of lighter colour wood. Easy to make up a few samples if colour match is very important.

Don't forget the epoxy will change colour later due to UV unless it is covered by varnish.
