Marina phoned me this morning to say that some gipsy b.....D had broken into my boat. So I jumped into the car and drove the 60 miles to the marina. The cabin door had been kicked in and the cabin looked like it would normally, after a journey in a hurrican, ie everything in a pile on the cabin floor. The keys which were well hidden were in the ign switches (Lesson learnt - never think you can hide your keys in the boat) thankfully the brainless prats didn't know about the battery isolator switches.
the tv was still there as was the dvd. the radio cass was ok, cd's ok, dvd's ok, radar ok, gps away to Garmin for repair so that was ok. Two tins of Tennants missing. The contents of the tool kit everywhere (One of those kits with 240 bits now 239 as my 10mm socket is missing). Life jackets and everything else intact,
why would anyone break into a boat wrecking the door and leave the tv etc behind. A closer investigation has found that the flares are all missing which I am most concerned about. In the wrong hands who knows what damage these could do.

Oh great! The slimeballs are at it again.
Why do these scum think they have the godgiven right to steal and wreck other peoples property?

Oh, maybe it is because their esteem is low, and they feel humiliated, or maybe their dad shouted at them when they were little.

Perhaps we should leave more boose, and cakes and biscuits so they feel welcome when they break in? We wouldn't want them to sue us for dissapointing them would we?

The idea of leaving some booze out isn't as mad as it sounds. After we had a break-in at home, evidently carried out by teenagers, the Police recommended leaving a bit of booze visible so that any future intruders didn't trash the house looking for a drink.

Whatever you think of this, there's a certain logic to it.

So far as Derekh's break-in is concerned, I guess we should all be on the lookout for a couple of scallies, swilling beer, waving lighted flares, and bragging about having found a replacement for the missing ring in their socket set............

James, I really find myself wrestling with things like that.

Part of me feels 'yes, reduce damage potential', the other part of me thinks about leaving a Scotch bottle with best paint stripper around, but of course wouldnt do it. When you read it is possible to sue a bar if you break your ankle on a floor that you made slippery yourself by throwing wine on the floor two minutes before, one wonders.

Perhaps the world would be a more sane place if it were not lawyers that created the laws? There somehow seems to be a self perpetuating gravy train.

Judging by what happened to a boat in Exmouth some years back I would say you've had a lucky escape.

A Trader 41 sports was broken into, alcohol consumed, flares found and let off, result boat completely destroyed!
It was alovely boat, very sad to see it still smouldering the next morning.

Hope the damage is not too severe and easily repairable. At least nothing of value went missing. What sort of security precautions/patrols does the marina have?

Would they nick you for that then, putting something nasty in a bottle and the burglers drinking it?
After all, you were just storing it in the bottle it's not your fault the brainless twats found it and drank it is it.
Anyway, if you put the right stuff in it they aint gonna be around to tell anyone are they.

Sorry to hear this Derek. Do the marina bods have CCTV - most do. If the drunken gits are as stupid as they think they are, then they will have been caught in the act.

Sorry to hear of your experience, hope you can make the boat "feel" the same again.
We had similar thing in Rockley few years back, door lock kicked off, nothing of any import stolen, only a fishing rod. Wondered if they were just looking for a shelter perhaps? SWMBO always felt a bit jittery after that about leaving the boat.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, these people should be flogged. Personally I hate burglers with a vengence only trouble is you very rarely catch them & when you do its generally some cowering scumbag who rolls up into a ball & screams for mercy. I know it feels like a personal violation but just try to put it behind you.
All the best...........Nat

Dave,

I agree with your sentiments on CCTV, for several years now I have been trying to persuade Dover Harbour to make their surveillance cameras available to Bert holders as web cams. In this way there would be, potentially, many eyes looking at the marina all the time. – It can only be beneficial and perhaps break-ins like Derek’s Sun seeker would be detected. Sadly, Dover is not receptive to the idea.

Sorry to hear that ours was done a month or so back, similar situation, nothing taken just a busted doos and a bit of a mess. I spoke to the police and frankly all I have to say is I wish I had not bothered, they were just about as incompitant as the bugger that broke in!

Bad experience all round but I now take a little more care so good lesson learnt I guess. I have an alarm on order, it looks quite good (if it works). It is little unit with a movement sensor built in that you sit in the cabine of the boat, when it picks up movement it calls your mobile phone and optionaly sounds an alarm. It is cheap so worth a try.

Does your marina have security ? if so I would have something to say about it. Very strange why they would leave all the valuable stuff. However I had a van stolen a few years ago and they only nicked a power drill and a elec. tester leaving a couple of grands worth of equipment behind. the point being that these type of opportunists low lifes are generally thick. Does'nt help you though and I am truly sorry that you and your family have had to endure such a thing.

Sorry to hear this, derekh. I agree with itsonlymoney in that I would ask the marina where their security was. Was there no security gate to the pontoons, CCTV or patrols?

John the only damage was repaired easly. The marina has a locked gate on the pontoons and there are cameras. The police have the tapes. We think perpetrators probably used a row boat or canoe.
Sunday night is known over here as 11th night which is a big night of celebration before the twelth. (Garvaghy road and all that). That is probably when we will be able to sit watching an unorganised firework display (My flares) at 12 midnight when the bonfires are lit. I will be more than happy if my flares are set off then as I would hate them to be used for more sinister things.
