Still \'No Regrets!

After her recent antifoul, service and recommisioning, we decided today was going to be time for No Regrets first outing of 2008.

The only remaining jobs are to polish topsides and a little fettling here and there, but everything else has been attended to, so with only a little trepidation, and most of that due to the fact our previous boats have been outboard or outdrive, rather than Shaft.

Starting the old Sea Tiger was easy as always, and a few system checks while she warmed up proved satisfactory, apart from the doubt as to the accuracy of the fuel gauge, following vicious rumours being circulated recently.

Pulling off the finger was succesful, as there was none of the usual sidewind present, and I full-ported her around once half way along, which worked out fine with a bit of throttle, and we were wending our way through the Marina, with no wake at all!

Very different to Shamby...

Turning out of T&K upstream, we noted a fair old flow, so 1500rpm saw an estimated 5 knots, and plenty of steering as an added bonus. The first lock, manned by the lady with the Mobile phone was Ok as far as hooking up was concerned, but departure time saw me sliding along the edge of the lock like a [hushed voice] Narrow boat [/hushed voice] so instructions to SWMBO were issued to push off at the bows next time, which worked just fine!

Refuelling was not good fun, with 2 gallon cans and a few trips to the pumps at Tesco-on Thames saw the gauge climb to three quarters, but I got bored. Next time I'll enlist the crew to assist....

Overall, very much less 'leisure' than Shamby the sports cruiser, but more refined steering, ride comfort, stability and less vibes (Petrol has it's good points!) While I miss the driving position a little, I think the Birchwood will prove to be a nicer overall experience, certainly more spacious despite the same hull length, as space is utilised very well, and the extra beam aids things a lot too.

I must remember to clean the glass before we leave next time.....Glass is a step up from Perspex of course, but only when clean in the first place!

The river was calm, despite the flow, and we only saw a few robo's, no Mobo's at all. Where are you guys?

Re: Still \'No Regrets!

Careful..... remember that we Freeman owners have ways of dealing with dodgy Birchwood boaters.

Re: Still \'No Regrets!

Typical sneaky Freeman owner... he is not bothered by the Rock Salt or the South American Woodworm so he thinks he can threaten us with his MTB.

However, I am working on ECM for the Birchwood fleet... it is hard to fire a torpedo when your MTB is running round in ever decreasing circles!

Re: Still \'No Regrets!

The Freeman will almost certainly be sink from delamination caused by Osmosis before the MTB manages to fire one off..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Still \'No Regrets!

Nah, Freemans built like Brick Sh!thouses, your confusing them with Birchwoods... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Still \'No Regrets!

Built like brick outhouses for sure.

Damp, Smelly...inhabited by Wino's..... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Not to be confused with Birchwoods....as you say /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Still \'No Regrets!

Today, we took NG for a little trip to Sonning for a little lock and berthing practise before we have our first guests out in two weeks.

So, through Sonning lock, nicely manned without a mobile phone in sight....

Soon after the lock, we saw Watrerbed II, still floating, and making me sad every time I see her:

Then back to T&K where a little final sprucing was in order before tucking her away for the night. I have a powered polisher, lots of nice polish and a few spare pads to speed up the polishing process.

Next time, I'll remember the bloody extension lead.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Anyway, The topsides are 50% finished, unlike my polishing arm, which is 100% finished! Her's the good side:

Whilst I concede Shamby was possibly more comfortable, and had a fantastic view with the hood down, the Birchwood is far warmer, more stable and spacious, but she doesn't manoevre as well in tight spaces. I haven't crunched her yet, but getting back into my berth on a windy day is a bit precarious in my current state of practise. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Fingers crossed eh? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"getting back into my berth on a windy day is a bit precarious in my current state of practise"

Getting back into any berth at T&K in any boat on a windy day is an art form.
