Thanks Jamie. Yes, AMC do supply a replacement head via RoughTrax and it has good ratings in the Toyota community. But - copied from a RoughTrax email reply - "We aren’t able to supply a cylinder head for marine use. We don’t hold the heads here, we send them direct from the re-builders and they have a strict policy regarding supply to boats etc." So that appears to be out.
Milner's Off Road supply a Chinese variant and, whilst it is cheaper, it is a direct copy of the original Toyota head and so I assume it will probably have the same inherent weakness? Both of these are supplied as exchange units with valves etc already fitted and shimmed.
I had wondered about getting a secondhand short engine but I don't really know my exhaust valve from my big end. So I could end up worse off than I already am. The engine I have has only done around 500 hours and should mostly be in good condition. If I can get it repaired/rebuilt or even service exchanged, perhaps that will be my best option. I'm just staring to explore the market and if anyone has any comments or suggestions, they would be most gratefully received!
