sticky substance pollution

Would the recent pollution of the waters off the South Devon/Cornwall coast with a sticky substance, polyisobutene (PIB), which is killing 100`s of sea birds also have an effect on hulls/engines etc. Would you take your boat out?

I realise its used as an engine lubricant but, looking at its consistantcy after it has been flushed out of tanks I wouldn't want it going through my engine.
