Sticky Stuff Will Not Stick

At the weekend I tried to line my clothes locker with some self-adhesive foam to reduce condensation.

I cleaned and then wiped over the surface with acetone, and was surprised when neither the double sided tape or the self-adhesive foam would stick.

Tried rubbing over with sand paper, but that had no effect.

The stick stuff is really sticky, hard to remove from fingers if you touch it.

I thought acetone would have done the job but apparently not.

Any ideas?

There are a number of technical rules for yacht maintenance, which it is best to remember:

Nothing intended to stick will stick
Nothing intended to set will set
Fixtures don't fix
Connectors don't connect
Nothing will match its template
All substances leave a smell

Hawke House say to heat their sticky backed foam with a hot air gun before sticking in place. That definitely makes it stick better.

I think Seashoreman has it. The weather is cold and the atmosphere very humid currently. The advice above re heating the cold surface and the sticky side of the material is good, but If you can get the entire interior of the boat warm, so that your breath doesn't condense on the cold hull surface, you may have more success.

Thanks for all the replies.

I was getting condensation in the locker but cleaned and wiped it dry with paper towels, so discounted that as the cause of the problem, maybe a little too hastily!

I'll try heating the locker and the adhesive backing and see if that will works for me.

Ta,

Gary.
