I found a sticky stick whilst feeling around in my bilge yesterday (don't ask why). Its about 18" long and 1" wide and has four saw cuts on it. I'm thinking its a fuel gauging stick. What do you think?

sounds plausible........ the boat I crewed had a similar, but slightly longer, stick kept in the corner of the cockpit locker for that purpose.
Have you tried it in the fuel tank . Is it the right length. would one of the saw cuts correspond to a full tank.
I expect these days people would want a digital version interfaced with the chart plotter, GPS, engine management system. auto pilot, wind instruments, microwave, electric toilet , etc etc etc.
If you can bare to live with such an obsolete device as an analogue stick give it a try
I'll need to clean it up a bit (a lot) before I stick it in my fuel tank. I don't want to get any dirt in the tank because I'd have to take the engine out to remove it.
I'm quite happy to measure my fuel with a stick! Simple is best IMH.
