Sticky residue remover?

Heads bulkheads were previously finished with some self-adhesive vinyl monstrosity which is peeling away leaving a manky wet sticky sh!t residue behind. I’m gonna rip it off this weekend and see what horrors it may be hiding and then go from there. Probably make good and paint. Hey ho. Any idea what might help get the sticky off? Acetone? Petrol? White spirit?

I know there is a specific sticky stuff remover spray available online but I’m not gonna get that before the morning.

Try something less hazardous before going for solvents. I was able to remove similar gunge with a hot air gun and scraper. A hair dryer is more gentle. Wear gloves, the softened glue will get everywhere.

You might find Lidl sometimes offers a small spray cans for cleaning sticky residue which being cheap have a place on board. Almost as useful as the spray cans for removing stains from dropped grease from croissants or suchlike.

I had that horrible stuff stuck on the inside of the hull in the forecabin and it was starting to peel off.

I couldn't find any chemical to shift the residue that I could tolerate inhaling so in the end I just scraped it off. It was tedious work but a talking book helped to pass the time!

I repainted the bare surface with Dulux Kitchen emulsion which lasts well, can be washed down and is easy to apply a fresh coat over when needed after a few years.

I've just peeled the vinyls off my boat and used a stuff called "Goo Gone" from ebay which worked great!

In the end I tracked down a litre of Zep Commercial Sticky Stuff Remover from Toolstation. The only bottle in stock in the SW apparently, according to the customer service chap on the phone. He rang the Chippenham branch to reserve it for me and I took a quick detour off the motorway to collect it en route to the boat.
It worked pretty well. Several applications required on some particularly soiled areas and then lots of scraping to get the crud off but it did help to break it down. Certainly less hazardous than any of the other solvents I was going to fall back on. And well done Toolstation staff, could not have been more help either on the phone or in the branch.

Cellulose thinners is my "go to" liquid for removing sticky shit.
BUT BE CAREFULL!! Highly flammable and not nice to breath in.

Other options include carburettor cleaner ( from Eurocarparts or good motor factors) but protect your eyes and hands when using.

Finally, look up "SOLVEX" from Prochem. This is less aggressive than the above, but very effective at removing sticky gunge and can be rinsed in with water.

But whatever you use, please use eye shields, gloves, mask and relevant PPE!!
