Wotcha all,

My fenders are starting to go sticky but are otherwise perfectly serviceable so I have begun to think about sox.
Horrified when I saw the price of the ready made jobs.
I have discovered that you get buy fender sock kits at a slightly less horrifying price. But it is still very much a marinised price tailored for our "millionaire boat owner " market.
Any suggestions for a non marine source of material suitable for DIY fender socks ?

go to a motor factor and by a roll of stockinette wiper. it's the same material, undyed, and can be cut to length. cheap as chips.

Sleeves from defunct sweatshirts. though you would end up with fenders all different colours! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best material is towelling. Either buy a roll from your local fabric shop or do as I do and use a nice large bath towel. Dye it in your washing machine to the colour you want, then get on the sewing machine. one seam up the sides and elastic round the top. Easy peesy for us girls. If you really cant do it send me a personal message and I'll strike up a deal!

yes we have the same problem of sticky fenders. I guess it must be the uv beginning to break down the plastic.

My modom buys the elasticated material from a habidashery (sp??), and sews up one seem, and we fix them with rats tails.

last for a season, they fade quite badly, but are still servicable 12 months later.

Regards

I made some last year from blue fleece material bought from local market. Worked a treat but I lost em cos I didnt make em tight enough.

Plastimo do it as well. If you order it from Peters Chandlery in Chichester and have a 10% Peters card you can get if cheaper than £25. We bought some fender sox stuff at the Southampton Boat Show and it is OK but we are about to buy some stockinette from a car outlet next week, and give that a try, as suggested in an earlier post.

Thanks everyone.
Bought some stockinette from a car place this am. A double thickness perhaps dyed blue will be perfect and cost about £1 per 24"X8" fender. Even if they only last a season its a result !
