Help!
Recently I cleaned and oiled some of my teak decking.
I used expensive pukka teak restorer and teak oil from the chandlery and followed the instructions to the letter .. it looked great till I stood or sat on it .. now the black stuff between the teak strips has gone sticky and bits have smeared over the teak. All my wife's trowsers have black stripes on where she's sat on it.
What have I done wrong?
What's the best way of cleaning the black stuff off the teak?
How do I stop the black bits from being sticky?
Help advice and counselling gratefully received.
Thanks
Peter

Sounds like one of those products has attacked the caulking. I would guess the restorer. A lot of the cleaning products on the market cause Sikaflex and the like to break down. If the smears on the teak are thin, they may well harden off again if the deck is covered and then the best way of removing them is to use a high quality scraper of the type favoured by cabinet makers. I have the name of a Swedish variety somewhere and will try and find it.

As regards the trousers, I think some yacht clubs still allow you in with stripey attire!

The name you are looking for might be 'Skarsen'. They made good scrapers, but I think I heard they stopped trading.

Another simple and effective cabinet scraper is a small thin sheet of tool steel obtainable in good tool shops. Takes off very small amounts of wood and leaves a good finish. You sharpen it by cross filing to leave a thin burr on the edge.

You can get the caulk off using Homebase sealant wipes - at least it worked for me after I stepped in some fresh caulking and promptly trod it all over our teak deck!

Our marina neighbours have also suffered softened caulking and theirs seems to the result of using a chemical cleaning system (Semco I think) too often. Unfortunately neither they nor I habe any idea what the remedy is apart from scraping out the old caulk and starting again.... uurrgghhh /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
