Since buying the boat recently we have been puzzled at how high she floats. Have just had the bottom blasted (Tony from Brighton - recommended - very skilful, not expensive) to get 15 years A/F off, to find she has been peeled and epoxied and the A/F brought up 4" too high to cover up marked areas!

We have restored the water line to where it should be, refinished this 4" strip and painted it, now looking for a contrasting stick on trim strip 1" or so wide to cover the join between it and the gel coat above. Have tried local car shops, they only have narrow pin stripes.

Anyone know a source please?

There's a good range here, check for your local stockist. Be warned that it's a tricky job to get it absolutely level, I'd be tempted to stick masking tape on first (immediatelyabove the intended position of the stripe) and make sure it looks right, then put the stripe on next to it. Some people use a laser level to get a true line.

The trick to get line straight is the old car-body refinishers method :

washing up liquid / water mix to provide a slippery surface (breaks the water tension and also spreads the contact glue). You apply liberally to surface and then lightly apply tape. You then lightly slide it on the fluid till straight etc. Then roller it down hard to squeeze out the water / liquid mix. It then sticks like proverbial once dried. It also helps you get rid of air bubbles. Any bubbles that are left can be pin-pricked later.

To get absolute best instructions on above - visit car repair shop and ask...

But personally as another says - I'd paint it - then you can touch up later if any scrapes etc.

Thank you everyone - very helpful.
Just to clarify, this line will be several inches above the water line, I don't think I would use trim tape down there. Even so, contrasting hard a/f isn't a bad idea - especially as I have half a can of bright blue! Does go a bit chalky out of water.
Food for thought.
