Steyr diesel

A friend is looking at a cruiser with a Steyr diesel engine and has asked me what I know about them but I'm afraid the answer is zilch! Has anybody else heard of them? Are they a manufacturer in their own right or a subsidiary of someone else? Any comments on the extent of their representation in the UK, spares availability? Has anyone had any experience of them at all?

Styer Diesel

It's an Austrian marine diesel engine and I think they are made entirely of stainless steel or a similar material. I'm sure BMW have a manufacturing plant in Styer so maybe there's a tie in with BMW. Not sure about UK dealership or backup.

I have a Steyr 256 in my Karnic 2460 and think its a very good unit. We have done over 150 hours in 8 months without a blip. Parts seem to be readily available from the main importers/dealer but seem expensive but then so are all marine engine manufacturers bits and bobs.

Bought mine from Mermaid Marine in Ferndown who used to be the main importers, they still carry out my servicing. Excellent family firm to deal with.

Sorry I said without a blip not quite true as our alternator played up from day one but mermaid marine replaced it under warranty foc

No not Daimler, that's Mercedes Benz, they are the direct competitor to BMW.
and yes I also heard that Steyr is a supplier of engine blocks for BMW.

Steyr neither make their own engines or BMW's. They are part of Magna Steyr, and build vehicles for other manufacturers, especially 4x4 derivatives, plus a few trucks under their own brand, inc BMW and Merc 4x4 cars. They also buld the BMW X3, and Merc G Wagon. They used to make their own military vehicles, Pinzguauer, but these are now built in the UK.

BMW has its own Diesel engine plant at Steyr (the town), nothing to do with Steyr the brand.

I do not know the marine engines, but their own brand vehicles used VW/MAN engines, so could be marinised versions of these.

They also manufacture transmission parts like the Freelander 4x4 power take off.

Not sure if Steyr make engines for BMW or not but they most certainly do manufacture their own diesel engine designed purely for marine use and not another unit marinised. The steyr injection system is also their own, these are also used/made by other engine manufactueres under licence notably Mercedes.

I used to work for BMW. Their engine plant is definitley independant of Steyr. Danger of being put up against the wall and shot if you confused the two.

Steyr definitely make oily fidly bits in Austria, particularly transmission bits, but majority of revenues come from interior systems for the major VM's.

Am I correct in thinking that the Steyr engine does not have a cylinder head gasket?
ie it has a short block which extends down as far as the lower end of the piston stroke.
I had a 1939 BSA V-twin with a similar arrangement.

1978 Steyr-Daimler-Puch (SDP) and BMW sign their Corporate Agreement on December 21.

1981 In April BMW AG takes over the business shares of SDP. The BMW Motoren Gesellschaft m.b.H. is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW AG.

SDP continued post BMW up until I think the late 1990's, where most was acquired by Magna.

Yeh I like them, got two in a boat, they are a cast iron monoblock so no head gasket, (one less worry) with aluminium clamshell housing, so lightweight, they are controled by a ECU, but unlike many new diesels if the ECU fails you can run them with a simple manuel attachment, to get you home. The military like them as they can burn many diffrent kerosene type fuels and diesels with no mods, so one fuel for their trucks, boats and planes. They make the new V8 engine for the U.S. Humvee vehicles but no marine V8 yet. Manufactured at their factory just outside the town of Steyr in Austria, nothing to do with the Magna Steyr group or any other group any more, its now just Steyr Motors
Spares are easy to get hold of, but like anything marine they cost more than they should.
