Steyr Diesel engines

I have a 28 ft Bayliner which has had a Steyr 256 6 cylinder turbo Diesel engine fitted in 2005 to a Bravo 3 stern-drive, Full service history by specialist, I do not know anything about these engines are they reliable does anybody have experience of them? I have only just got her into the water for the first time and have a problem with the engine cutting out, she starts well runs beautifully for around 10 mins then if it where a petrol car I would say she starts "hunting” revs dropping then picking up until eventually she cuts out. If any body can make suggestion I would be very grateful. I have checked the fuel pipe breather and the charge out of the alternator and the fuel is not contaminated starting to run out of ideas and there’s a bank holiday weekend coming up typical! Steyrs are usually reliable lumps ....

How about fuel filters ... new or old?

Fuel uptake in tank may be blocked.... sort of gauze in there .... try to reverse flow ... or just blow air into tank through fuel uptake to clear. Ventilate diesel system and see if it clears.

Fuel shutoff valve ... is it damaged and locked in shut position?

Fuel tank ventilation ... is that clear ... no vacuum when opening filler cap after the 10 min run?

air in fuel system .... when filters have been changed ... is there anything loosened which can introduce air into the system ?

I'm no expert but this sounds to be fuel starvation.

When you say it runs for 10mins then picks up & die's it sounds as though the mixture is leaning out, just like when you turn off the fuel on an outboard to run the carb dry.

Does it immediatley start & run for 10 mins again after it's cut out?

Get a milk bottle of diesel disconect fuel pipe from lift pump into bottle and start then wait!
If all ok you know the problem lies further back to the tank.
I had problems with air sucking in off the fuel tank you may want to look at this.

Is your fuel tank vent anti flash gauze fouled with salt? mine was. Or maybe the vent pipe is kinked?

If it is the typical Bayliner Perko unit (rounded triangle shape ; chrome and black plastic), replace it with a stainless steel one. They are only about a tenner.

At best you have cured your problem and stopped your fuel tank imploding in the near future, at worst you have eliminated the vent unit and fitted a better quality replacement.

Hunting or stuttering is usually govener trouble. Depends on the type fitted whether it is oil lubricated of manually filled. As stated in another post ensure the tank breather is not blocked as this will also give the same symptons Good luck. pampas

Have a look at the lift pump, it may the diagphram failing or split. mine failed with very similar symptons, however the tend to be pretty cheap and easy to replac. I always carry a spare, for £30 it seems daft not to.
