I'm going to look at a Rinker 250 next week which has had a diesel engine conversion to a Steyr 256. I was not aware of the make in my quest for my first boat and so what are the spares and servicing costs and how reliable are they?

What about Rinker are they on a par with Regal and Bayliner that i have been looking at so far?

Steyr engines have a very good reputation. Made in Austria of the puck / Steyr. Widely used in rescue boats! The engine has electronic control unit injectors with up 2000bars injection pressure. It is also possible to run the motor without electronics.

The engine has had the same design since 1992. It was 212 hp at the time.
The engine is of the mono-block type and has no top-seal.
Cam haft is driven by belt! In the early editions hard running of the engine in cold condition, the glow sticks could fell into the engine. The engine is very lightweight and fits well in the fast boats!

I have a 250hp Steyr fitted in my Karnic 2460 The Karnic is 8.2 metres and is similar in style to the Rinker

I have had the Steyr since may last year that has done around 155 hours since new. The engine has performed brilliantly without any hiccups....yet!

Top speed in my boat is 32 knots at 4200 rpm loaded with full 350 litres of fuel, 50 litres water, 2 crew and all the fishing bits you could shake a stick at. This was on a day with no wind and a small amount of tide up our rear. We tend to cruise at 3200 rpm for 22-24knots. I keep a full fuel log that shows we have burned an average of 17 litres per hour overall. Bear in mind quite a lot of these hours are at tick over when we drift wrecks etc. I would guess at cruising speed we burn 20-22 litres per hour hour so not bad on the economy side

Ref servicing and parts. Our last major service (150 hours) cost around £330 inclusive. High spec oil and as per usual marine engine parts are expensive but to my eyes so are jelly babies

These engines do tend to smoke when cold but soon clear with little or no smoke when under load.

Good luck with your viewing

Martin
