Morning,

Has anyone got first hand experience of the Steyr 256 engine???

i know a little about the usual Volvo, Yanmar etc etc types but not had any experience or seen much information on this.

understand its rated as 250 Hp and as with most Steyr's smaller and lightweight. believe its running on a Bravo outdrive but dont know which one yet.

It would be in a plaining hull of 28 feet with twin step. all up rig weight or around 1800 Kgs......

many thanks

I've got 2 in this 32ft boat with Bravo XR drives, goes well and good on fuel.

Now i watched that boat at the start of the RB08 and then followed from the comfort of my desk for the rest of the trip!

Lovely boat and everything behind it too. Just hope the Harmonic thingie is sorted now and you get better luck in RB11 as well!!

If i recall, you are getting circa 50 kts from yours with twins? what is the all up weight for that??

if we can get up around the 48 / 50 kts it could be perfect for us. the alternative is a 225 Honda outboard of the more prefered 300 verado!

many thanks

The harmonic damper was a batch fault, the boat is running at 55knots, weight is 2500kg and it carries 150 gal of diesel.

What boat are you thinking about?

Hi Z1ppy

As Bart says I have a single Steyr 256 in a Karnic 2460 @ 8.2 metres long. The boat, engine bats etc weigh in around 2300kg + 350 litres of fuel with all the associated clobber probably weighs in with a total around 3000kg. We have a bravo 1 leg with a 15 1/4 dia 18" pitch 4 bladed prop. With two crew no wind with no tide we achieve 32knots for 4200 revs. Cruising at 3000 revs gives us just shy of 20 knots. We do tend to get a bit of white smoke at start up in this cold weather but it does clear when under load. I am told this is normal.

This is the second Steyr I have had. The first one had numerous issues and after ingestion of water and was not very well at all. Long story short I told Mermaid Marine to go and plant it somewhere and fit a new one. I must say we have put over 150 hours with this new engine in 8 months and it hasn't missed a beat, very pleased with it so far. The service received from Mermaid is also first class which is I believe an added bonus in the marine trades.

If you have any further questions please ask

Many thanks all,

Good to hear positive stories of the dealer as well. am i right in thinking Mermaid are based in Bournmouth??

The boat in question is a Cougar R9 rib so think we will have the weight advantage on the Karnic but still concerned its going to disapoint a little with top end.

as for the big air pic, love it! remember seeing it on the other forum some time ago! unfortunatl i was travelling for the start of the CTC race otherwise i would have been out there to see you flying along too!!

Ferndown near Bournemouth however they are not the main importers anymore but still provide servicing.

A firm called Mitchell Powersystems are the new importers
