Hi. I have a Hunter Ranger 265

I’ve attached a pic of the stern tube. I’ve got a leak which seems to be due to wear in the stern tube. Recently changed the engine mounts on the Yanmar 1GM and while I had the prop flange split
I found quite a bit of movement in the shaft. Is anyone familiar with the construction in this area. Is there a bearing in there or just a fiberglass tube.

Almost certainly just a GRP tube with no bearing. The shaft is supported at the prop end with the P bracket cutless bearing. The internal diameter of the tube will be greater than the shaft to allow the shaft to move with the engine - although the movement is small as the Volvo seal also provides support. It is important when you align the engine (which you should do after you change the mounts) to undo the seal and slide it forward so that you can centre the shaft in the tube before you do the alignment. Use wedges to hold the shaft central, removing them before you push the seal back.

Does not directly help with your water leak as you don't say where it is coming from, but my guess is either the clamp holding the seal on needs tightening, or the shaft is offset in the tube and distorting the seal sp allowing water past the internal lip seals - or if it is water dripping from the seal, it may just need greasing. (annual job!)

Thanks. That’s great info. I was afloat when I done the mounts so will re do the alignment as you describe Next time I can dry out. Leaking from the seal which its never done before that Volvo seal has been bone dry never a drip

I find alignment easier to do when in the water as it will move when out. I would split the coupling and see how far it’s is out from the natural centre that the Volvo seal is trying to set.
