Stern Tube replacement

If your getting your tube through Volspec or Frenchs you are paying them as the middle men. they use an engineering company in Ipswich , think the name is Davy but they are defently based at the Old boat yard Cullingham RD, Ipswich, near lidl

you do not say if you have fixed stern gland or flexible coupling
with the combination of mounts coupling and sterngland normal convention is 2 out of 3 can be flexible but not all 3 (r+d couplings may be ok though)
other idea is would it be posible to fit an outer bearing in the sterntube

Re: I had this too...

Sounds to me as if you have an engine alignment problem. Also the Volvo seal is not great at holding the shaft central in the stern tube. I used a conical insert slid on the shaft and into the stern to to hold the shaft central whist aligning the engine mounts. You should check for wear in the cutlass bearing before trying any alignment using a Volvo seal.

the normal Yanmar mounts r very "soft ", my Sons boat suffers from this problem when engine is "stopped" it bangs the shaft against the stern-tube a couple of times its quite a long shaft o/all but not much in the bilge

Dear All
Thanks very much for all the useful input and contacts, esp jfkal & maxi for their own experiences.
Having replaced everything except the tube itself, i.e. mounts, coupling, seal, shaft, propellor, cutless, you can all imagine the expense so far incurred, all to no avail, and see that I am determined to carry on to the bitter end!

Yes she was at Pin Mill for many a year - now lives at OYC. Nutcracker is now back on the Orwell after defecting to Burnham I believe for a few years so quite a little fleet of 25.5s building up in this neck of the woods. If you can live with the limited accomodation, by modern standards, (and noisy propshafts), these boats are an absolute joy to sail, even the wife will drive it which she has never done before with any other boat!
