Stern Tube problem

While looking for a leak below the water line on my Trintella 29, I noticed that the stern tube arrangement is loose.
That is :
The original stern gland appears to have been modified to accept a greased tube- with a remote greaser in the cock pit.
The tube that the greaser tees into is now not fixed tight and is able to turn indpendent of the prop shaft.
Unfortunatley I didn't have a camera or phone with me.
I will take some shots next week

I have not seen a shaft sealing arrangement like this before and I deal with packed gland shaft sealing every day of the week in my other business.
Does anyone have information on this type of shaft sealing - I would guess it was fitted in the 1970s.

Depends on what type of stern gland you have. Many stern tubes have two notches/cutouts in the end, into which two male extensions on the stern gland assembly fit. The purpose of these is to stop the gland spinning with the shaft, if its overtightened. When the flexible tube holding/sealing the stern gland to the stern tube is tight, it shouldn't be able to turn, just flex as the engine moves.

Be sure to check that the rubber hose if, fitted, has doubled and secure stainless clips at the sterngland; the sterngland should not be able to rotate else it will twist and destroy the hose and a serious leakage will occur. Viv Cox's website has various sterngland setups and the appropriate info to them.
