Graphite packing is not suitable for Stern Glands as it can cause electrolitic corrosion and you may know that graphite is a good conductor of electricity! Therfore PTFE Gland Packing is the most suitable . (Graphite is best suited for steam applications) The greasers fitted to stern Glands are there to lubricate the bearing behind the packing. The bearing is there to centralise the packing to the shaft. If packing is slack then grease will help minimise water ingress, beware grease will pass through the packing and end up in a big mess in your bilges. So best bet is to replace the packing and adjust it correctly. Best place to get PTFE Packing is 'Boat parts and spares' website. Quality, very reasonably priced and very fast dispatch.
