I want to fit a stern anchoring fitting, but it seems that whatever I do, there is a chance of damaging the transom on my fat bum AWB.
Anybody got any suggestions for a setup that doesn't damage the deck or transom.
Mostly, I use a 10kg Bruce with 30m 10mm and loads of anchorplait. Its too heavy to recover by hand sensibly, so what might be the suggestion for that.

Boat is Sun Odyssey 35

Cheers all

I fitted a stern anchor sytem when I built my boat twenty years ago. It has hardly been used. There are few occasions that need it, and if you do, the stern deck doesn´t suit the job. No anchor winch, no overhang when you are recovering the anchor, lots of other kit underfoot.
If I needed a stern anchor, I ended up setting it from the bow with a snatch block on the stern quarter, so that it is launched and recovered from the bow. That way, it is recovered with the main anchor winch, and it is available as a second bow anchor when needed.

Stern anchors are much used in Scandinavia so the catalogues have a lot of items for the purpose. In Sweden Watski is the main chandlers supplier and has a very large catalogue. Try Googling Watski.
You could probably get more info from A Scandinavioan yacht builder at SBS.

One system that might suit is a sort of long stainless steel hairpin, hinged at the open end to the boats stern. the anchor is retained at the loop end of the hairpin till needed and dropped clear of the boat when the winch is unlatched
with a manual system you have a risk to your back as well as the gel_coat
for normal scandinavian practice _ mooring by the bow to a rock and with the sternanchor to deepish water i follow the recipe used by the services british keel yacht club and use an eight kg grapnel for a thirtythree foot boat
my keyboard has just forgotten how to punctuate of make capitals

Having had our stern anchor for nearly five years I decided that it was time to remove it from the lazarette where it had resided all that time and see about proper fittings to our Bavaria 42. Whenever we DO need to moor bows to (we are in the Med) we have either used a running moor with the main bower or struggled with the stern (16kg) anchor when crewing levels permitted.

What I have, in recent weeks fitted, is a long snout self parking fitting with chain arrestor made especially for use on boats with sugar scoops*. This is fitted to the rear end of the port side gunwale capping. The chain (10m) sits in a custom made canvas bucket with lid inside the curve of the taffrail, more or less on top of the fitting and the anchor in purpose made chocks on the back surface of the taffrail.

On realising that we are "late in" and need to take the ballasting fouled berth at the root of the quay, we can flip the hook in to the water without it hitting the hull, attach the rope rode and at the appropriate point release the arrestor and let it go.

Recovery is by sheet winch until the chain appears at which point the arrestor is deployed and then, easily by hand for the last bit (the chain) as it is easy to just haul vertically on a controlled (by the fitting's roller & cheeks) vertical metre or so. When the anchor is up to the level of the fitting, it is a simple matter to lean over and swing it back upwards into it's chocks. There are no fears of chipping the gelcoat with this set-up which nagging fear is usually the principle impediment to relaxed anchor deployment.

* these may not be as freely available in the UK as they are in the Med. but I'm sure that I've seen similar in various chandlers' catalogues.

I had me previous boat up in Norway for 4 years and during the second season I fitted a stern anchor and gear.

I remember that I had a choice of systems available off the shelf in the local chandlers and was able to 'choose' fittings that woudl work on my boat (then a SIGMA 362).

As suggested else where look online in the Nordic catalogues or give a them a call - most businesses up there are able to deal perfectly well on the phone in English.

Good luck,

OK we're going out to Greece a week tomorrow for a week. I NEVER log on out there so I'll snd you a pic some time after 230906

Very nice Hylas, but I have 10m of chain and 50m of anchorplait tied to mine, and that installation would just drop onto my bathing platform! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
