Could any one advise me as to wether it is the done thing to have a stern light on the top of the mizzen mast as my present one is mounted on an insecure post fixed to the davits to clear the dinghy and could also become caught up in the mizzen sheet.
May I take this oportunity to thank all who gave good advice on my question of using a lap top via a chart plotter.

i don't believe the regulations specify the height of the stern light. there is an issue with masthead-level lights getting lost against the shore when viewed from the bridge of a ship. given that you're very likely to have cabin lights visible from astern, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

fwiw on boats up to 12m (hint: fill in your profile) it is permissable to use an all-round white masthead light as comined steaming/stern light.
