Stern ladder considerations

The problem with this oft-quoted idea is that I’m already using the mainsheet, for its intended purpose of controlling the movement of the boom. Doubly so if the boom still has a sail set on it.

If the sail is drawing it would probably be moving the boat; that would make the recovery of an MOB that much more difficult. One more reason for dousing the sail as you approach... and that's when a stack-pack comes in handy.

We did some experimenting at our club with a typical 40 ft cruising sail boat. The recovery over the stern seemed to be best. Granted in flat water. however I suspect that pitching in a sea might be an advantage when stern goes down to get him up.
The best system seemed to be to use a stern ladder. However if you have a rope around him or a harness. You take a line or tackle to a point above the stern. The obvious place here is the back stay. It needs to come from well above the deck. With this tackle you can help him up the ladder, provide a backup if he slips and in extreme to drag him up.
Coopec's idea of a tackle on the stern rail might be good but higher would be better. Just practice....ol'will

This is where having an engine hoist of tackle on a stern goalpost
