My stern gland has the stud port and stbd. So cant fit a volvo because it needs a circular thing to fit to. If I reverse that part of the gland I will have a round part, but is that the right size to take the seal
Hadn't thought of that. Thanks. I remember on a previous boat not using the big hex thingy and shoving the seal on over the male thread and clamping it there.
You need a minimum of an inch and a half of stern tube to fit a Volvo type seal to. The seal you have will be fitted with a flexible hose cuff to the stern tube. If there is room for the cuff, there will be room for the Volvo seal.
In the interest of easier access I moved my Orbitrade - same as a Volvo - eight inches further forward on a thick wall GRP exhaust joiner tube. I used a new cuff, the joiner tube and the new stuffing box. Five years on, as dry as a nuns crutch!
In addition to the 40mm or so length of tube to attach it the diameter is critical and in turn depends on the shaft size. Here are the shaft/tube sizes for the Radice which is the best version with the vent and greaser (Radice make the original Volvo seal as well) lakesterngear.co.uk/catalogue.pdf#page=35
I have just fitted one to an old style stern tube that originally had a hose to take a stuffing box. Machined to 48mm (30mm shaft) with a cutless inside as the shaft is rather long (1.6m) and an intermediate bearing a good idea.
