Stern Glands

How often do you have to service or grease stern glands and how is this done? All I can see of mine is a sealed rubber thing. Always had legs before so totally ignorant to the way of the gland.

Grease is used for your rudder stocks but not stern glands, they are "lubricated" if thats the right word by the salt water, so the shaft does not overheat. They just need tightening after trips, if the drip too much, they are meant to drip about once ever 30-40 seconds, unless of course they are deep sea seals in which case I havent a clue.



oh and if they let too much water come in after you have tightened em they need new packing
