Hi, I asked a while ago about my stern gland which "leaks" when squeezed - if this was correct. Finally got a photo of it (which is poor, sorry, but hopefully good enough?).

This leaks when squeezed between thumb and forefinger, and drips maybe once or twice per second when motoring.

Normal?

Also, what do I used to lubricate the shaft/gland interface? Glycerine?

TY!

Not exactly clear photo but it looks very much like a Volvo stern gland. Yes it should drip when squeezed, this is the correct procedure after launch. Burping the gland dispels the air and allows water in for lubrication. It should not drip when motoring

Definitely a Volvo seal. Should leak when you squeeze to expel air. Should not drip when running. If it does this suggests that the lip seals are wearing. They should be lubricated annually with a "special" Volvo grease available in a small tube that lasts for years.

Volvo recommend changing evry 5 years but many have run for much more than that without any problems. If it is dripping then suggest you replace next time it is out of the water. Not expensive and easy to do. New seals (and grease) available from any Volvo dealer.

You have to remove the shaft, sorry about that /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

No need to remove the shaft. Uncouple the shaft from the gearbox. Remove the coupling from the shaft - probably just a clamp fit. Clean the end of the shaft, slide the shaft and prop back to get enough clearance to take the seal off (it is 110mm long). Unclamp the seal from the tube and slide off. Replacement is reverse except you need to use a little spacer gadget to protect the seals as you put it on. Comes with the new seal together with idiot proof instructions.

Sorry yes, you do not have to withdraw the shaft completely.

But getting it out of the coupling can be the problem, depending on the arrangement and how long since it was last removed
